Carisoprodol or Soma® is available by prescription only. This drug is available as a 350 mg white and round tablet, 250 mg white and light orange two-layered tablet or two layered yellow oval tablet.
Uses
Carisoprodol is prescribed for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. This drug is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant. It is prescribed for the treatment of muscular pain. If the dose is increased any without medical advice or if it is continued using after pain then Carisoprodol can create some problems. This drug relives pain by relaxing muscle. It also helps to release discomfort like strains, sprains, spasms and other muscle injuries. Remember Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxing drug. It should not be used for other pains or body aches. Use it only for the muscle injuries.
Carisoprodol dose
Normal Carisoprodol dose is one 350 mg tablet three times a day and at bedtime (1400 mg/day). To manage chronic pain it is often taken with other drugs like benzodiazepines or other muscle relaxants.
How to take
Take Carisoprodol with food or immediately after taking food to prevent stomach upset. Your dose should not be increased by yourself unless your doctor recommends you to do that. Also do not take it more often than prescribed. Carisoprodol gives temporary relief so it may be used in addition to rest, physical therapy and other measures. Carisoprodol gives you temporary relief but it can take longer time to cure. So do not try to exercise too soon. You must follow your physician's prescription to recover soon.
Storage
Store this drug at room temperature. The temperature must be between 59 to 86 degrees F.
Missed dose
Take your missing dose as soon as you remember if it is within an hour. Skip the missed dose if it is more than 3-4 hrs and if its time for your next dose. Do not overdose.
Effects and duration of effects
Carisoprodol starts to work within half an hour of oral administration. It lasts for four to six hours. Many cough-and-cold products containing antihistamines can cause drowsiness. Check the medicine label carefully. If you have any questions about this drug then consult with your physician. Never start or discontinue any medicine without the approval of your physician.
